Wake Up, Girl!

One of our very interesting projects was to design a book cover for an author. A very challenging task to express so many emotions and thoughts into visuals! We used an Apple Pencil and iPad Pro to create the final cover.

Synopsis of the novel:

What the hell is happening? That’s the only thought in Naina Bansal’s mind as soon as she returns to India after finishing college in Boston, United States. Naina had a fair idea that on returning back home, the word marriage would be brought up, but she had no idea to what extent.

On attending a family wedding in New Delhi, Naina re-visits memory lane by thinking about Boston, and all that it had entailed. Naina’s character is described as a shy and reserved girl, who isn’t confident about herself. She also hasn’t had any relationships in the past. The story brings forth Ayaan Arora – a Punjabi boy from Chandigarh, who is Naina’s senior and enrolled in college on a scholarship basis. Naina is drawn to Ayaan’s sincerity and genuine nature, and the two fall in love. Naina hides the relationship from her parents back home, knowing they wouldn’t approve of Ayaan as he’s from a different caste and not wealthy. Naina’s parents are shown as people who care a deal about social standing and money. Her relationship with Ayaan comes to an unfortunate end when Naina’s mother finds out about it and forces the couple to deal with issues never spoken about earlier.

We cut forward to the present day, where Naina is ambushed with meeting boys for arranged marriage in Delhi. Out of the two boys she meets, Naina is forced to get engaged to Rohan Agarwal – an extremely successful and wealthy second-generation entrepreneur, with who she has zero connect whatsoever. Now that she’s engaged, Naina tries to make an effort with Rohan, even though she’s unhappy with the situation. She goes back to Delhi to spend more time with him. However, on this trip, Naina walks in on Rohan with another boy. The engagement is, therefore, called off.

This event finally makes Naina confront her parents on their conservative ideologies regarding her life. She decides to take charge of her own life, and not be a pushover any longer. She realizes that she’s been blaming other people for situations in her life that haven’t worked out; when in fact, she should have taken a stand a long time ago.

The story moves ahead to Naina shifting base to London, where she has taken a job as a market research analyst at Citibank. She comes across Shiven Mehta – an incredibly smooth and flirtatious banker at Goldman Sachs. Following a particularly frustrating incident at work, and a conversation with her mother, Naina decides to spend the night with Shiven. During their perfectly entertaining evening together (where they don’t end up sleeping together), Naina finds out more about Shiven’s life and shares details regarding her own past with him. Once more, Naina follows her heart and falls in love with Shiven. Since Shiven is Gujarati and from a professional background, once again, Naina’s mother voices her reservations against the boy Naina’s in love with.  But, this time, Naina stands up to her parents and asks them to respect her choices in life.

With an exceptionally quirky and reprimanding inner conscience, Naina is highly relatable to all readers. She is flawed, and most of all is human. Wake Up, Girl! is a light and humorous read, that shows Naina tumbling through the highs and lows of her life, and leaves the reader with a feel good factor.
